Bishop O’Connell field hockey finished the season with a record of three wins and three losses in the WCAC, and ten wins and seven losses overall. They started off the season only winning two games and losing four, before getting hot and going on a six-game winning streak. Their season came to a disappointing end after being knocked out in the WCAC playoff quarterfinals by Paul VI.

Mia Young, senior, has played midfield on the varsity field hockey team for the past two years. Her favorite part about being on the team is the strong community, which is what originally attracted her to the team as a junior. “Everybody just loves each other and it shows in our play,” she said. She is also a captain along with fellow senior Olivia Mann. When asked about what makes her a great captain, she said, “I bring the energy and just pump up the team. I believe in leading by example and always playing hard no matter what.”

Because of their strong community, the varsity field hockey team has long-standing traditions. First, the team makes ribbons out of the opponent’s school colors and wears them during games. Secondly, the team does a pre-game cheer where they say, “Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, bless this field we’re playing on. If we do our very best, we know that God will do the rest.” Her favorite memory from this past season was beating rival Paul VI High School in overtime shootouts. Mia encourages girls to join the field hockey team. “Even if you don’t know the sport, go out and play. The team’s there, the coaches are there, they’ll teach you how to play and you’ll find your best friends there.”
